Richmond is an ancient and historical town, founded by the Normans in the year 1071. It is a typical rural market town, on the banks of the  river Swale.    
It has a large cobbled market place, a castle dating back to the 11th Century,  much Georgian architecture, including the Georgian Theatre Royal, three museums, a nearby abbey and is surrounded by wonderful scenery.
